COVID-19 Update: Trans Tasman Horse Flights Resume

Posted on 29th Apr 2020

Good news this week as NZB Airfreight announced it has completed a successful flight from Auckland to Sydney with a small group of horses on board.

Special precautions were taken to ensure the safety of staff, crew and horses.

"The test flight was conducted with all grooms and travelling staff in full personal protective equipment, including overalls, masks and gloves, with loading and unloading completed by a separate bubble of handlers to avoid any potential spread of the Covid-19 virus."

It is hoped that the success of this flight will pave the way for more flights. There is currently a backlog of more than 200 horses waiting for Trans tasman transportation.

Quarantine procedures aren't anything new for the horse transportation industry.

"Our grooms are probably used to quarantine because we have quarantine flights. It shows the professionalism of the industry and the people we have got."

However, on this flight all of the grooms were required to return a negative COVID-19 test result before boarding and remain in isolation upon return to New Zealand.
